Trackback Spams

Well, I feel like I have hit the big times. I just deleted 65 trackback spams. I feel like someone noticed. Hooray! (well, really, Thanks to the new anti-spam features in MT 3.2).

Goodbye TiVo, Hello Comcast DVR.

I just got off the phone to order a Comcast High Defination Digital Video Recorder to replace the TiVo. Why you may ask? Well, there were a dozen stories today about TiVo locking down shows based on flags set in the broadcast. This feature of the Macrovision copy protection scheme. It’s designed so you can’t record something off of Pay Per View and keep it around for years to come. But, it was not supposed to be able to be applied to normal broadcast shows. Obviously, something changed. Two issues came up. Either the station broadcasting the shows “accidently” turned it on (why would they be able to do that in the first place?) or the TiVo misunderstood noise in the signal as the Macrovision flag.

Okay, now you’re asking yourself “If he is upset about the media flags, why in the world is he going with the Comcast DVR?” Well, I know that I’m going to face DRM with the Comcast DVR. It’s right up front. You expect it from a media giant like Comcast. But TiVo? No. So, why should I pay $12.95 a month for TiVo, which has the same DRM restrictions available to it that will prevent me from keeping a copy of The Family Guy for more than 7 days, when I can get the same right violations on the Comcast box for $9.95 AND get HD recording AND get dual tuners? It’s a no brainer now. So, we’re switching. They’ll be out Tuesday. I’ll be sure to whine about the interface like everyone else. But, I’ll finally get to view HD content on our year-and-a-half old projection television.

Holy crap, it’s been 10 years?

Today, I got an e-mail from Classmates.com telling me that Erin Svalstad sent me a message. I didn’t recognise the name so I logged in and looked at it… one of our senior class officers got married and was notifying us that the Class of 1996 would hold it’s reunion in May. 10 years. TEN YEARS. I feel like the guy in “Grosse Pointe Blank” who Martin ran into shortly after arriving back home. TEN YEARS.

Jesus, I’m really old. :(

Movable Type Hack: Multiple domains, one installation

I believe that I accomplished a minor feat in the world of Movable Type hacks, and it required no Perl or SQL knowledge at all. I set up Holly’s blog on her site tonight. They’re both hosted on the same box, and use apache’s domain based virtual hosting to keep them independent of each other. However, we are sharing the same MT installation. The problem? In all of her pages, her links to scripts (such as trackbacks and comments) were coming back to recompiled.org instead of to her domain. Why? The CGIPath in the mt.cfg specified recompiled.org as the path. How did I fix it? Read on, my friend (or friends, but, friend is more likely).

Burnout

It’s Sunday, 11:46pm. Holly has been in bed since 8:45. I am still awake because I know that when I go to bed, I will have to get up and go to work tomorrow.

Gotta love burnout…

11:57pm… ran the server logs through an analyzer. It tells you what people searched for on a search engine to find your site. Someone searched for “latinas getting raped” and found my site. I have no clue how this happened, because I don’t remember ever mentioning “latinas” or “raped” in my postings… oh, wait, nevermind. I found it in the Bob Costas entry.

Okay, I’m going to bed now. I promise.
