HOWTO: Fix SystemUIServer on your Mac after hacking in Front Row and applying the 10.4.5 update

Wow, longest. title. evar.

Anyway, I rebooted my Mac today and when it came up, I kept getting crashes on SystemUIServer.

SystemUIServer quit unexpectedly

EXEC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (0×0002)
0×00000002

Thread 0 Crashed:
0 BSRemoteControlFeatureAvailable + 140
1 0×1000 + 7556
2 0×1000 + 6544
3 0×1000 + 49204

After some searching and digging, I found the cause. I had followed Andrew Escobar’s excellent guide to getting Front Row to work on my (unsupported) PowerBook G4. The update to 10.4.5 patched some of the file used to make the Front Row hack work, so they started crashing. The solution is rather simple. This assumes you already had Front Row installed and working, and now it is erroring out. If you want to install it for the first time, I recommend you read Andrew’s Directions.

  1. Download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 Combo Updater
  2. Download and install Pacifist. This awesome program will go inside of .pkg installer files and let you copy our individual pieces of the program.
  3. Use Pacifist to open the package. Restore the following directories back to their original locations by right clicking them, and choosing the obvious option:
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BezelServices.framework/
    • /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/
  4. Using Andrew’s Front Row Enabler, (re-)Enable Front Row
  5. Log off and back on (or reboot)

… and that’s it! It should work again! Good luck!

Desktop Screenshot

I finally decided to make my desktop my own, after forever and a day of having standard everythings. I’m not usually one to have awesome looking desktops, but I think I did good. Here is a screen capture of my current desktop. Click for a larger version

The picture is from quaid60 on Deviantart, mirror flipped. I spent several hours this weekend cruising the postings on Deviantart trying to find a photo that made me stop and look at it. I went through over 1,000 photos and wallpapers, trying to find the one that I liked. I saw hundreds of really crappy backgrounds. Some were too bright. some were too anime… some were too porn… god, lots of people taking photos of porn stars and throwing it on a background and claiming it as their wallpaper to the world. Alas, I digress. I had three other photos downloaded as options when I saw this photo, and then I was done. Mad props to quaid60 for the manipulation (If you don’t notice from the picture above, they’re not straps on her skin. View the full size. Brilliant.) and his model who took the picture herself.

Anyway, the dorks will want to know all of the specifics. Icons are the Somatic set from IconFactory installed using CandyBar. I’m also using a battery and weather widget from Konfabulator on the desktop. Adium X is down there for instant message in the lower right (cut out some of the info for obvious reasons, natch.) Subtle Tunes is the music interface for iTunes (also a Konfabulator widget). Terminal.app has some transparency in the background but you can’t see it because I didn’t want to screw up the view of the awesome background.

Brushed Metal to his agent…

I read one of the funniest things in a long time today on Daring Fireball, the blog for John Gruber. John was apparently smoking some really good drugs when reflecting on Apple’s new color scheme for iTunes when he wrote this telephone call transcript. Good stuff.

Fry’s — A Dork’s Wonderland

So, this evening, Holly and I took a drive up to Fishers to visit the new Fry’s Electronics store there. We have heard of Fry’s from our friends who live in California… vast cornucopias of computers and televisions, at prices that make Sam Walton upset and selection that makes grown men weep. Read on for some more narrative and a selection of the items we acquired from our trek.

Various Updates

First off, ecto for Windows sucks but rocks on Mac OS X. They can’t possibly share any codebase because they are night and day.

Okay, first off. WiFi Spray is designed to keep your WiFi network running at tip top shape (via Gizmodo).

Holly found this heartwarming story for me. Thanks baby!
